Campus Conversation: Update on the Transformation

August 24, 2023

A Campus Conversation was held on Thursday, Aug. 24, to provide updates on the next steps in the academic review process and to discuss key aspects of the University’s overarching Transformation initiative.

The presenters and panel included: President Gordon Gee, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Maryanne Reed, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Rob Alsop, General Counsel Stephanie Taylor, Associate Provost Mark Gavin and Associate Provost Lou Slimak.

Note:

During the Campus Conversation held on Thursday, August 24, the question was asked by a participant if during the appeals process harsher actions could be imposed than originally proposed. West Virginia University would like to clarify and provide additional context for that question.

In all cases, the preliminary recommendations in the program review process were developed with the intent to affect a particular outcome for a department or its programs. It is not the intention of the appeals process to subject further reductions or introduce new program recommendations. But is it possible? Yes, as explained below, using a hypothetical example.

During the appeal process, a department will present additional, critical information with the goal of moving to a more favorable outcome than the preliminary recommendations suggested. For example, the preliminary recommendation was to preserve the program but reduce the faculty from 10 to 6 (continue the program with specific action). If the program were to appeal by suggesting they could not operate the program with fewer than 10 faculty, the appeals committee would then need to consider whether to dissolve the unit and eliminate all 10 faculty (versus the recommended 6). Clearly, that would be a less favorable outcome (or “harsher” as written in the question) that resulted from the additional information brought to the appeal process.

Again, it is not the intent of the appeal process to introduce new recommendations. But to be completely transparent, as the University has pledged to be, if a department brings information that warrants a different decision, it is possible.

Why did the University develop these sessions?

Dr. Gee mentioned in his State of the University address on March 1, 2016 that West Virginia University must think differently about higher education. We need to implement strategies that lead to effective management of resources and provide for transformative growth.

To be innovative in our thinking, WVU has created several Transformation Teams. The goal is to identify more than $45 million in cost savings and revenue generation over the next five years.

We will make this happen by being creative, collaborative and bold. This is not a time to be risk averse. Rather, it is a time to be strategic risk takers in order to position West Virginia University as a progressive leader known for its commitment to education, healthcare and broad-based prosperity.

How will Campus Conversations work?

Each month the University will hold sessions to discuss ideas and gather input from the campus community. Conversations will be one-hour long. At least two sessions per topic will be scheduled.

Conversations will be held in different locations, as well as be broadcast live. Sessions also will be videotaped and posted on this site following the discussion.

What if I cannot attend in person?

Campus Conversations will be broadcast live, as well as be videotaped for viewing later. Look for the link in Enews or visit the Enews website.

You also can send questions prior to the session at social@mail.wvu.edu.
